About Me

About Me

Like many others in the industry, I stumbled upon life insurance after earning a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Michigan. What drew me in was its role in the economy—accounting for 2.5% of GDP (only accounting for the retail individual life sector in 2023)—its rich history, its evolution, and its real-world impact on families. I was especially excited by the opportunities created by advancements in technology and data to improve how we approach this business.

I started my career as a life actuary, gaining hands-on experience in actuarial valuation, modeling, forecasting, product pricing and assumption management. I was always looking for ways to improve processes, whether through better cross-functional alignment, collaboration, automation, or smarter use of data. In my third year, I led a project to improve how actuarial assumptions were developed, introducing a Bayesian framework to create more data-driven models. The approach was adopted with enthusiasm and sparked my passion for finding practical ways to make things work even better.

As I grew in my career, I took on larger initiatives beyond actuarial work, such as establishing enterprise committees, supporting digital transformation efforts, and collaborating with distribution teams focusing on emerging channels. These experiences gave me a deeper understanding of the insurance value chain and where opportunities lie to deliver real value to both carriers and consumers.

In 2021, I began my entrepreneurial journey, securing pre-seed funding and joining the Global Insurance Accelerator. Out of 3,000+ applicants, we were one of seven companies selected, which gave me the opportunity to build and scale a business while gaining invaluable insights into the broader insurance ecosystem. With support from VCs and accelerators like Gener8tor and RevTech Labs, we built one of the leading embedded insurance solutions for life and supplemental health products distributed through financial planners, credit unions and FinTech partners. Our B2B2C distribution model allowed us to deliver tailored insurance coverage to digital-native clients, helping them secure their futures in the way they prefer.

I’ve shared my insights as speakers at conferences like the Global Insurance Symposium (2021), InsurTech Hartford (2024)Global InsurTech Summit (2024), the Society of Actuaries’ impACT Conference (2024), LIMRA Life and Annuity Conf (2025), Global InsurTech Impact (2025) and many more. These opportunities have allowed me to connect with other business leaders in the field and explore ways to drive the industry forward.

Today, I lead strategic partnerships across the insurance value chain, identifying where collaboration creates the greatest strategic and economic leverage. I focus on systematizing execution and turning partnership ROI into a company-wide growth engine, one that closes critical gaps and strengthens the moat. These experiences have sharpened my skills, given me a unique perspective, and kept me focused on solving meaningful problems in the life and health insurance space.

Outside of insurance, I am a former competitive grappler who still cares deeply about health and fitness. I enjoy martial arts, reading history, and getting into lighthearted debates with my son. I’ve also traveled through 39 U.S. states, usually following my curiosity while keeping a healthy respect for risk, a habit that comes naturally when you’ve spent your career in an industry built on managing it.

If anything here resonates with you, I’d love to connect. If you’ve read this far, we probably share some common interests. Let’s exchange idea – I look forward to hearing from you!

Warm regards,

Dennis Li, FSA
